Case Study
Sensitive Site Exploitation to Combat the Use of WMD
Challenge
A White House report submitted to Congress in 2007 stated that the “lack of capabilities and procedures to secure and exploit WMD sites” was a major counterproliferation shortfall. Existing procedures were lacking in their operational effectiveness, and the field and training programs were not integrated to encompass scientific, intelligence and security issues. Government and general industry were unable to train government employees and teams on the full range of capabilities required to support counterproliferation operations in a high operational tempo (OPTEMP) environment.
Solution
WSG reviewed existing tactics, techniques and procedures (TTPs) to identify areas of operational and technical concern; developed new and innovative procedures; and developed and implemented comprehensive training programs for Sensitive Site Exploitation to Combat the Use of WMD. We have developed more than 30 programs that include more than 400 course modules culminating in the most extensive counterproliferation and sensitive site exploitation training curriculum available. All programs involve a methodical approach that includes realistic and intensive practical scenarios designed to replicate enemy sites and threats. The training prepares and challenges individuals and teams that conduct sensitive site exploitation operations.
Results
The shortfall identified to Congress has been satisfied with a comprehensive solution that meets current and anticipated operational requirements. Students trained by WSG have had operational successes on the battlefield, resulting in increased national security and a reduction in the threat of WMD use against the United States.
